Roxies Ranch Story
On February 17th, 2016, a pivotal moment transformed my life. Super Bowl Sunday, I sat with my dad and brother, the front door slightly ajar to invite in the crisp air. Amidst the game, my gaze wandered outside, revealing a distressed brown dog trailed by a vulnerable puppy. Moved with compassion, I hastened to open the door, confirming a distressed mother and her helpless offspring.
With concern etched across their ragged coats, it was evident they had been neglected. Armed with nourishment, we cautiously approached, hoping to alleviate their suffering without causing further distress. The little brown puppy, curious but cautious, met our eyes, while the fearful mother evaded our advances, disappearing down the street.
In a swift yet delicate maneuver, my brother secured the small, ailing puppy, and we carried him to the safety of our home. The distressing signs of malnourishment and neglect were evident – a distended belly, eyes crusted with goop, and fleas clinging to his frail frame. Despite his dire condition, a bowl of milk and chicken elicited an eager response, leaving me both relieved and enamored as he devoured the nourishment.
On February 17th, 2016, Roxie entered my life, rescuing me as much as I rescued her. Our fates intertwined in a synchronistic dance, forging a bond that transcended the conventional human-pet relationship. Fast forward to 1/24/24, Roxie, now eight years old, has endured surgeries and health challenges, yet she remains a source of profound joy and cherished memories.
As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, the time spent with Roxie fueled my desire to extend compassion beyond our home. Three years ago, a simple act began - weekly trips to Costco for dog treats packaged in Glad Bags. These treats became tokens of kindness offered to homeless pet owners in Stockton, a small gesture that warmed hearts and filled hungry stomachs.
The urge to make a more substantial impact intensified, leading me to envision a retirement filled with purpose. Inspired by the documentary "Territorio de Zaguates" on Netflix, showcasing a dog sanctuary in Costa Rica, I found clarity in my calling. Retirement plans crystallized into a vision - the creation of my own dog sanctuary.
In 2024, the wheels were set in motion - a website launched, social media accounts activated, and the foundation taking shape. The countdown to retirement commenced, with the next 5-6 years meticulously planned for the sanctuary's realization. The journey encompasses securing a tranquil haven, constructing a haven for dogs to thrive, and establishing vital connections with veterinarians and compassionate individuals.
